so hot right now: advocating for equity during extreme heat

As summer heats up, it's important to recognize that extreme heat disproportionately affects marginalized communities. At reframe52, we believe in educating ourselves and advocating for those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Here are some ways to deepen your understanding and become an advocate for equity and safety during extreme heat.

“Groups most at risk to heat include, but are not limited to: children, older adults, people experiencing homelessness, people with pre-existing conditions, people with disabilities, indoor and outdoor workers, emergency responders, incarcerated people, low income communities, pregnant people, athletes, and more.” - heat.gov

Learn About Heat's Unequal Impact:

Read & watch: Explore articles, reports, and studies that detail how extreme heat affects low-income communities, people of color, outdoor workers, and those without access to adequate cooling. Documentaries and interviews with affected individuals can provide personal insights and a deeper understanding.

Engage: Participate in community meetings or online forums where heat safety and climate justice are discussed.

Understand Workplace Safety:

Research: Learn about the regulations and guidelines for workplace safety during extreme heat.

Support: Speak up based on what you learned. Advocate for policies that require employers to provide adequate hydration, rest breaks, and cooling measures. Sign or start petitions calling for better protections for vulnerable workers.

Promote Community Support:

Lend a Hand: Help out at local cooling centers or distribute water and information about heat safety in your community. Regularly check on elderly neighbors, those with health issues, and others who might be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Share: Spread information about where to find cooling centers and other resources.

Fight for Climate Justice:

Advocate: Support policies and initiatives that address climate change and aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Join: Get involved with organizations that work on climate justice and equitable access to resources.

By educating ourselves and advocating for systemic changes and environmental justice, we can help mitigate the impacts of extreme heat on marginalized communities and work towards a more equitable society. Stay informed, stay engaged, and let's make a difference together.
