reframe52 toolkit™

The reframe52 toolkit™ is a self-paced diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging program delivered through a mobile app. Designed by educators with expertise in scholarly research, creative practice, and curricular development, the program is split over scaffolded modules.

The curriculum encourages introspective reflections and thought-provoking activities, including using media, journaling, and collaging. Each week provides 2-3 short exercises, depending on the topic and related activities. Participants can split their work over the week at times that are convenient to them. As they reflect on the weekly topic, learners are given a simple call-to-action each time: stay mindful of what they learned as they show up in their everyday lives.

microlearning

Existing research and available data show that conventional diversity and equity programming - often referred to as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives have low efficacy. In other words, most programs - often delivered via short workshops or trainings - may change minds, but behaviors rarely change in the long-term. To address this challenge, we wrote a self-paced curriculum with micro-learning activities. We have short and focused weekly lessons delivered via our custom app (currently in development). Our 20 to 30 minute lessons utilize micro-learning, a known method to boost knowledge retention.

scalability

The flexibility of a self-paced curriculum paired with a micro-learning format means your employees can engage in the program in complement to their schedules. The minimal disruption to day-to-day responsibilities eliminates one of the most common barriers to this type of learning in the workplace: time.

Accessibility via a mobile application also allows for part-time, remote, and contract employees to participate without requiring access to internal corporate IT systems.

sustainability

The world is constantly changing, meaning that DEI learning doesn’t have a clear end-point.

The consistent delivery of engaging content over 52 weeks sustains the conversation on DEI and promotes the development of habits that consciously build diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging.

This will equip your employees with the ability to adapt and evolve alongside society, culture, and your company.

the curriculum

self-paced

We all have different circumstances and identities– families, second jobs, school, division of labor at home, mental health, disabilities. Together with the growing demand for flexible and remote work, we believe that a self-paced program is an inclusive one. While longer than traditional programs, the weekly commitment is no more than 50 minutes and doesn’t have to be completed in one sitting. As long as learners continue to engage regularly, the program will remain effective.

scaffolded

The curriculum is scaffolded, meaning the content and learning goals are intentionally structured to build progressively - participants define, access, and strengthen their understanding of new concepts, skills, and various ways of understanding. Each lesson builds on the learning from weeks prior, allowing participants to learn what they need when they need it, while also building cumulative knowledge over time.

The curriculum has four modules: 1) Individual and the Self, 2) Community, 3) Systems and Structures, and 4) Interconnections and Moving Forward. The introspective lessons and exercises in our curriculum promote psychological safety, allowing participants to make connections from their own experiences (feelings of being left out, or misjudged) to the experiences of marginalized groups. This approach also mitigates the harm and emotional labor individuals with marginalized identities can experience when participating in training with others that are recognizing their privilege for the first time.

introspective

One of our big takeaways for reaching people with our app is to teach people how to ask deep reflective questions and in all areas of their lives. Because the most effective DEIB training creates space for empathy and learning from the perspectives of those similar to and different from us, we designed a thematic curriculum where participants have opportunities to think and rethink, have real-world application, and have room for analytical reflection. We intentionally include belonging in our approach, because purposely cultivating a sense of belonging moves us from being simply aware of inequity to making space for all.

Our app is currently in development. We aim to bring our app to corporate and organizational partners who, like us, are seeking more equitable experiences for marginalized identities - but also searching for effective and thorough DEIB trainings for their employees.
